the man told me they cant be fixed and itd need replacing, but i have removed the dirt an also some of the yellow has gone...can i just repaint the area - underneath the perspex and between the plastic backing?

i have yellow acrylic paint...it doesnt quite match but i can mix it until it does and make it look almost unnoticable...(i am an artist etc so will do a good job).

it is only a small mark (size of say a 50p) and doesnt really obscure or change any numbers ...its basically a W with a sort of line underneath coming from the righthandside 'V' to the bottom...so is not remotely confusing (was a bit pissd off that he failed me on it actually, fair enough if a P looks like an R or a V looks like an N or something...as he mentioned speed cameras etc...but this isnt the same...but hey ho)

will this be acceptable? the only reason i can see would be that the paint i have is not reflective...

any thoughts...
cheers

Number plates are cheap enough to replace. Why go to all the trouble re-painting them?
If it were me, I would just go along to Halfords and get them to make up a new rear numberplate. I dont know what they charge but it may be better for you in the long run. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you manage to get it sorted! :)

cheers but its abotu £15, plus extra to fit it...as the screws are rusted over and i cannot get them out at all, so i thought of painting it...its no trouble to paint a small dot yellow...

i could get a new one at some point but right now i cant...fixing all the issues on the mot is so far going to cost me, along with the test, about £100

i just want to know if itd pass the test
No help to you, but there are worse sillier things to fail on - like having an air freshener hanging from the mirror, and which can easily be removed. I didn't know it would fail on that, and thanks to them not pointing it out I had to rebook the test after removal. OK, it didn't cost me extra for the test, but it cost me extra in time and trouble having to go back!!!

it wasnt the only thing - id have been fuming if it was...there were more serious issue too
The rules state that the plate will not be obscured.
If all the stuff on the surface has gone .. and you can read the letters clearly, then you should be ok re-painting the background.
Usually black stain marks are left on the film.
Take it to another place for an MOT, My car passed on a cracked number plate, The garage I used to take it too failed it on a cracked number plate, Some will try to cash in on anything they can. Some will not be so fussy.
agree with ravid, mine has a crack and it still got through.

Yes that's a good idea, take it to another testing station where the tester looks up the last mot certificate for your car and sees it has just failed so he fails it and you pay another £55 for the test!
Time to find a new garage!

aye, but i dont see whats in it for him, they dont make plates...he seemed to think the police were being stricter about it now...

i will probably just buy one because i dont want to have to keep repainting it, i just dont want to have to pay now....
Just my idea - and I might be completely wrong - but if you paint it using a bog-standard yellow then the plate will NOT be as it is intended - ie reflective.

This will still make it illegal and they may stillnot pass it if they are that pedantic about it
by the way did the tyre pass???

yes puternut thats what i said, i wondered if that would be the main issue...

that link is not my question by the way...but there was a nail in my tyre too, and passed on that ...they noted it and the guy even said i could leave it if i wanted, but to beware that if it fell out the tyre would go down...

it failed on a dead bulb and a tyre that had a bulge....thankfully easily fixable
If you replace your plates, don't forget to take the V5 ( Log book with you as proof of ownership, without that they will not give you replacement plates.
