I have a personalised number plate which is an S reg. Can I put it on a car older than an S reg? I always thought I couldn't, but no one else seems to agree and now I don't know where I got that impression from!

Older yes.........you are not allowed to make it appear newer, but older is OK.     Check out with DVLA website.

I think ianess has got confused.

His explanation is correct but you cannot put an S reg on an older car (e.g. P reg) because that would make it appear newer.

I thought that's what I said kempie.    Where's the confusion?
Because hugnie21 wants to put it on a car that's older than an S reg, therefore making it appear newer than it actually is.

Basically, you can put the reg on a car that is newer than indicated by the reg (thus making it appear older) but not on an older car (thus making it appear newer).

'Older yes'

ianess - your answer is that you can put an S reg plate on an older car, which you then explained was illegal. Your answer would be correct if the question was 'Can I put an older plate on an S reg car?'

OK...I give up......sorry about the confusion.  I'll just keep taking the tablets.

Yes kempie is correct. My son has just personalised his and I am aware that you can't put any plate which is date oriented on an older vehicle.

You may, however, put such a plate on a newer vehicle.
