Fitting a rev counter to a 106

i have bought an aftermarket rev counter for my 106 and i have fitted the always on live, the switched live, the earth and i have aattached the wire to the coil but when the car is revved the needle on the gauge does not move as quick as it should it stays around the 1 on the gague, has n e 1 got any ideas on where the wire may go? the car has no rev counter pre installed.
