Does anyone understand this. In my service book for each service there is a list of things to do, each column is preceded with 2 tick boxes that have "yes no" as their column headings:

So does cross in the "no" column mean a yes? Does a tick in the no column mean no or yes? Is this maybe just down to the how the mechanics fill in the book? Any one out there know how to interpret this? It looks to me like a tick means it was done regardless of the column it's in. Any BMW service guys out there?

I'd interpret the crosses as being "something which needs attention"

Thanks but I'm trying to determine what was actually carried out, the service book is not where recomended actions are suggested it is a record of what was actually done.
don't they give you a detailed report with the invoice? My garage does - it tells you everything they did and what they found.

No I just bought the car, I'm trying to interpret the book.
TWR BMW TIS Online Repair Manuals, All you need is here.
Ah - I see.
Question Author
where does it tell me what the books means TWR?
??? If you look down the left of the TIS page it will give you your cars year/mod, click on that then move to the appropriate section, myself I have the disk, I have a 99 coupe the disk is very useful. just a tip, your car will be on a chain not a belt so do not be worried about that, you have just got the car? get a local family run garage to check it out if your not too well up, if you get all this done the car will last you 200000 + but that depends on your pocket, the oil in my car get dropped every 5000 +filters, Why? 165000 in mint, look after your car & it will look after you.

Thanks but I was asking about the book, can you see the picture in my link? above. There are two questions about this maybe we are at cross purposes. Thanks for your help.
What that's stating, if its Ticked that's been checked or replaced, If 2 boxes for the brakes eg/ Brakes checked it may tick NO, so they have visually looked at them. For your own piece of mind call the garage that the car had its last service, for a couple of Quid they may give you a print out.
I think that each item on the 'Evidence of Maintenance' list has to be shown to have been addressed.

Some items will have been worked on and received a 'mark' in the Yes column, others will have not been worked on, a 'mark' in the No column......but the Mechanic will have looked at these items and decided that there needed to be No Action taken at the time.......and has to have some way of confirming this.

Two different mechanics have completed the works in your photo, but I think the convention remains consistent despite the ticks or crosses.....I think you have to take account of where they appear.
Question Author
right so a tick in the no column means it was checked and did not need doing? so a cross means it wasn't even checked?
It doesn't matter what mark was used.

The first chap has 'ticked' a Yes for the things he did do......and rather than tick a No for the things he didn't do, he's put a cross.

The second chap has just ticked a 'positive' mark for the things he did do and for the things he didn't do.
Not another petrol Kayless!....try the 640d......its the future!!

deisel and front wheel drive are the work of satan.
My wife knows nothing about cars but when I showed her your service book she understood it, get a grip,

All the operations have a yes or no box, surely you know what yes and no mean!

If it has a x or a tick in the yes box the job has been done! If it has a tick or a cross in the no box it has not been done!
Question Author
sorry if i'm thick but it is not clear, so a cross on the no box is a double negative is it?
Don't keep knocking yourself Kay, there are plenty of Questions like yours on this site, If people cannot give you a decent reply, do respond to their insulting bloody answers.
Not respond.
the 'x' could mean not applicable to your vehicle or not part of that particular service being carried out.
