Could be something simple like a loose connection, or an intermittent fault. Your local dealer should be able to plug a diagnostic kit which will identify the problem.

Is your car a Vauxhall by any chance?

I've known this problem on several Vectras.

This would happen on my own vectra and the car would lose power.

I've never had so much fun, especially when overtaking a lorry on a single carriageway road.

Thank you Vauxhall!

and thank you Steeles of Worthing for your interest

have you sussed it yet?

I had a problem with my Vectra which mis-fired once and the management light came on. Diagnosed as a faulty cambelt sensor.
This is likely to be your idle control valve if your cars a Vauxhall... or Jeep....  they can be cleaned for around 30 but a new one might be up to 200.
