We all criticize their driving including myself, but is it right that the insurers charge disgusting premiums for the young? Yes I know all about the cost of repairs etc.
I would argue that if insurers aren't allowed to give cheaper premiums to women based on sex discrimination they shouldn't be able to give cheaper premiums to older drivers; it's age discrimination!
it is purely an underwriting calculation, it is not a subjective penalty, so yes it is correct. 90% of the premium is for the damage they can potentially do to other cars/people/property generally.
I agree completely but why can't they apply the same reasoning for women drivers? Or have they just been giving women drivers cheaper insurance to be nice all those years?
Just curious really. If women have less accidents than men and have lower premiums, do young females have lower premiums than young males? By that way of thinking, they should have.
Well then I agree. They shouldnt age discrimate either. Very senior drivers can be as dangerous as young reckless ones. I feel sorry for young people trying to buy their first car. When I was 17 a car was a necessity not a luxury. The nearest bus stop was a mile away down an unlit country lane (for a once an hour bus). Positively unsafe in this day and age (as well as cold, wet and miserable)
How many times do we hear that home insurance is going up for everybody because of storms in Cornwall, flooding in Cumbria etc? The cost is spread nationwide. The insurance companies are probably perfectly able to spread the cost regarding car insurance too but probably choose not to because they want to screw more money out of drivers and young drivers are an easy touch.
I think that is flawed thinking, insurers should be able to adjust based on risk, not PC rubbish. If the stats show women have less payouts they should pay less, simple.
I know; I'm hoping that as I will be 25 this year the drop in premiums from being in the next age bracket will make up for the jump in premiums for women drivers!
no 237SJ, experienced drivers should not be punished by being overcharged to level the playing field in favour of high risk drivers. Are you happy to pay double so boy racer can pay half? No, thought not. The current system is fine.
