In my HGV driving days as it is now, if you worked over the driving hours even 5Min's ( Yes, 5 Min's) you could be fined hundreds of pounds, how convenient that this government is now allowing fuel tanker driver to pull them out of the sht & allowing them to exceed the permitted hours, after their ill formed fuel statement & a strike that was only an option.

its an accident waiting to happen. :(

One in York has already happened red.
To be honest in my small amount of motorway / dual carriageway driving I find tanker drivers are the most reckless !
My thoughts entirely, TWR.

The permitted daily hours have been extended by two hours to eleven - quite a hefty increase in my view. This situation has arisen because of idiocy on the part of government ministers. In telling drivers to keep "topped up" they cannot be surprised if they do just that.

To allow drivers hauling around 5-6,000 gallons of petrol to drive for eleven hours a day is just plain lunacy.

Thunder, your statement is total rubbish, do you know what is carried in tankers? before you come out with statements like that, do your homework.
My partner drives HGV and I have the utmost respect for all of the tanker drivers.
i know, TWR, but making tanker drivers drive for longer than recommended hours could be the cause of another accident.

tanker drivers may well be well trained, but everyone gets tired when driving for too long.

An experienced HGV driver does not have accidents Red believe me, its caused by some thing someone like the driver on the M5, If that idiot in the bus would have used the hard shoulder for the purpose that its made for, he would have been home that night,
Question Author
I sould have added Red, I've been there & seen the vidio.
Question Author
Should.
experienced drivers dont get tired when forced to work longer hours? so why are the hours enforced in first place then??

of course they get tired and this can cause accidents.
Question Author
With Respect Red, I was a HGV driver for 35+ years so I think I know what tiredness is.

Everyone is different TWR. I struggle to drive on the motorway for more than an hour as it makes me so tired.

Just because you drove for 35 years doesn't mean you can speak for others!
-- answer removed --
He can't speak for them either. Everyone is different, fact!

TWR: "One in York has already happened red."

Has there been accident in York involving an over-tired tanker driver? Or are you referring to the woman who was burned while she poured petrol from one container to another in her kitchen near a lit gas flame.

I hadn't heard that these driving restrictions are being lifted but if it's true I think it's an unwise move
You can't say a specific group of drivers would not have an accident just because you were one. Anyone can have an accident. However much experience they might have.
