Worn Tyres.......
Took my motor for an MOT and was certain it would fail on the 2 worn front tyres, they look quite bald on the outside but it only failed on a blowing exhaust and wiper blades.
What's the ruling regarding tyres?

I also wouldn't continue to use it if I had doubts on the safety of the tyres.

The tread has to be above the legal minimum (1.6mm) across two thirds of the tyre width.
This is the law being an ass, as the part that is worn in your case is the part the car is travelling on !
It sounds like the tracking might be out on your car, a simple and cheap adjustment provided the control rod nuts aren't seized solid !
Some tyre shops might even 'turn the tyre on the rim' to save the cost of a new tyre but you would have to ask...

Many moons ago when I was young, foolish (and skint) I knew which garages I could take my Viva to that were renowned for "passing anything with a wheel on each corner". Indeed a well used trick within my circle of friends at the time was to cover rust holes in the chassis or inner wings with newspaper, underseal it, and when the underseal had set, remove the newspaper. The Manchester Evening News was the best as their paper was thicker and less likely to go to pieces during removal.
I think it's a lot harder for that sort of carry-on to go unnoticed nowadays.
