Strange noise in a VW Polo
69 Answers
I was driving home this afternoon when my car started making a strange noise. The noise only starts when I go faster than 35mph and it sounds like a cross between a faint siren and a mosquito in the car (if that makes sense - I am not very technically minded). Any ideas folks?

To be a little more serious than my last contribution (for which, humble apologies), I have experience this phenomenom a couple of times. One was something vibrating in the ventilation system, so try closing all the vents, the other was a sticker that the channel ferry company had stuck on the windscreen that only vibrated when the car had the right speed through the air. As this latter one manifested itself when I was driving down through France I was tending towards mild paranoia, what a relief when I found the culprit.
I had a puzzling noise similar to this start with my Golf last year Mrsoverall. It turned out to be the timing belt rubbing slightly on the inside of the metal timing belt cover. I'd recently changed the timing belt and I obviously hadn't tightened the cover's bolts properly as they were quite loose. I just tightened them beside the road and the noise disappeared.
It might be worth checking that the timing belt isn't brushing the inside of it's cover. Check the cover isn't loose and try to move it with the engine running just to see if the noise goes.
