Why are cars just not made to be unable to go past the speed limit except from emergency vehicles ?

i think its a good idea and have wondered it myself in the past - nothing to do with being a nanny state - anymore than being madeto wear a seatbelt or not use a mobile is being a nanny state - speeding is a problem so why not try to solve the problem at the start - obviously education, awareness courses etc etc dont work...
what is the point of having a fiat punto or...

You asked about limiting cars to the speed limit, when asked which one you said [i]Well I'd assume the National one, probably] as it was your question I thought you might have known, not made an assumption.
I congratulated you on passing your test (genuine congrats, it's a life changing thing to do) and passed a comment about your experience, or lack of it, and at no point did I suggest your question was not valid, maybe just a tad naive.

We already have speed limiters on heavy goods vehicles, as you may have noticed, tinks, now you can drive on motorways and can be annoyed by them! They are stuck at the km/h limit set by Europe, which is about 56 mph.
You'd have to have it set at 70 mph for cars. You'd have great slabs of cars all stuck at it, with one trying to overtake at 1 mph faster than the next, as happens with trucks now. Very doubtful whether that would improve the temper of drivers or save many accidents. Setting cars with limiters which adjusted to 30 then 40 then 50 then 60 then 70 or any combination of sequences, instantly, sounds both expensive and of no benefit.
Accidents are not caused by speed itself but by bad judgment or inattention at any speed.

I think it was a very good question tinks, pity you only had a few decent answers. If I may pinch your thread for a minute do you think it would be a better idea to fit all vehicles with a sort of radar device which would automatically apply the brakes when getting too close to another vehicle theoretically stopping accidents from happening at all ?.

Well limiting cars to a speed limit to avoid speeding.....one would assume it would be to the speed limit ....er...or they would be speeding?? I assumed that was obvious in my pretend situation.
Agreed fred....but it probobly dosent help matters......i must point out that although i said it would save a few lives i didnt suggest this be the next thing that is brought in...it was just a topic of discussion....dont think ill venture here again.....
Its a question and answer site. So i asked a few questions...it came across pretty rude the way you are suggesting im only asking such questions through boredom.
Thanks for the other valid answers guys :)

Hi Tink, ask what you want, the site is as much for you as it is for the regulars & their Sarcasm, your question as said is thoughtful, not many on here have come out with this before, That's 1 for you x, It is possible for a devise to reduce the speed as said, but just think of the hold ups! have you noticed the HGVs on the Motorways? prior to the 56mph HGVs travelled at 60mph, coaches used the third ( Outside lane) there was hardly any hold ups unless there was a bump, & that was mainly caused by a pillock in a private car. keep on posting, keep on looking, you will pick out the ones that are negative.
I have often wondered this Tinks - it makes sense to me. I honestly believe that in future centuries we will be looked on as barbarians for allowing vehicles to career about at stupid speeds, leading to unnecessary deaths.
If we had a decent affordable public transport system then there would be less congestion and there would be less need for cars.

My Tinkerbell haven't you touched a nerve!
I think when people argue that you're advocating a nanny state by forcing them to obey the law you can see they're running out of arguments
Many cars are limited to 150 mph - there's no earthly reason why all shouldn't be limited to say 90
Thing is some people feel they should be allowed to break the law if they don't like it.
they're normally the ones calling for the harshest penalties when people break laws that they do like - say camping in front of St Pauls.
But you'll find a lot of hippocracy on AB
And they don't like it when you poke it
