its worrying how many old people who are driving who should hand in their keys and licence, im not saying all old people should but there are a lot of old people on the roads who shouldnt be driving because their reactions are too slow or in this instance totally bonkers. i think some kind of retest should be done from the age of 60 to ascertain fitness to drive.

I don't think retesting at 60 would go down well if people are expected to be compos mentis enough to work until they are well over that.

60 is too young - so is, I would say, 70. But as soon as 80 is hit I believe you should be tested again.

Yes of course there are many 80+ drivers who are very good, but unfortunately there are many that aren't, and therefore we should tar them all with the same brush and by having a mandatory re-test at 80, those that shouldn't be driving will be weeded out.

Humbersloop, you are quite right - some people aren't compos mentis full stop. But 60 is a bit young to draw a line for driving. Sunny Dave probably has a better idea.

I had a relative whose close family felt he was no longer fit to drive. Slow reactions and failing eyesight. They suggested but didn`t push.
He drove the wrong way onto the A1 killing himself and his wife.
I thought that my husband, though much younger than this guy, was being affected by medication. He couldn`t see it because they never see it themselves. We all think our driving is fine.
A few rare arguments and my refusal to be a passenger made him stop driving. Sad but it sometimes has to be done.
I would hate to take a test now, although I am a fantastic driver, but maybe it has to come. Along with Dave`s suggestion.

both ends of the spectrum need sorting. 17 year olds drive like hell, no experience, just know where the throttle is, silly old sods may drive slower, but their reaction time is also slower, and, I see people who are unable to walk unaided, hobble out of the health centre, take ten minutes to reach a car, then get in and DRIVE! Can that be safe??? no one wants to give up driving, and there are probably lots of very elderly good drivers out there, but surely common sense must prevail at some point and a retest should be mandatory for anyone over a certain age, perhaps 75, a bit older than the new retirement age.
