I don't know if my petrol light works. I keep meaning to drive it round until it comes on but I always bottle it.
It might pick up some of the legally required one, such as ABS, air bags etc... but highly unlikely for the petrol warning light.
No, only things that are rum by the ECU.
What car is it?
Question Author
It must be broken.

It's been so empty that when I've put £10 in goes up to empty :-)

I don't drive much..

It's a KA.
It its got the digital display on the dash for the mileage you can put the dashboard into a test mode.

Put the key in the ignition but don't turn it.
Hold down the trip reset button
Start the car while still holding the trip reset and keep it held in for about 10 seconds until the display shows "test"

Then you can let go of the button, from then on each press of the button changes through different test modes... as below..

* 1.Shows a Gauge Sweep
* 2. Shows all 8's on the LCD (LCD TEST)
* 3. Illuminates all the bulbs on the dash
* 4. Displays hexadecimal value for ROM level
* 5. Displays the hexadecimal value for EE level
* 6. Shows DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code)
* 7. Digital Speedometer - mph
* 8. Digital Speedometer - kph
* 9. N/A
* 10. Digital tachometer
* 11.Fuel volume
* 12. Engine coolant temperature
* 13. Battery voltage
* 14. ABS fail
* 15. Electronic brake distribution (EBD) failure
* 16. Illumination
* 17. Crank Sense

So press three will light up the fuel light to see if the bulb works.

(the above works on a lot of fords as well as the KA... the digital speedo in KPH is handy if you're aboard.)

It's not digital. It's quite old (01)
Sorry about that
these lights usually come on just as you hit the red or between 1/4 & red, there should be anything between 3/4 to a gallon of fuel left.I know people who drive until the light comes on before they fill up.

The handbrake light works, as does the engine management light. The latter was the reason I asked about it going on a diagnostic machine which it obviously had to recently.
Question Author
If they test the lights I presume they are all working okay. Doubt the petrol light is part of the MOT though.
