From what I can find if it's a Smart car key then you have a very short period of time in which to replace the battery and if you take too long then it's a dealer job to re-sync the car with the key (although not an expensive one)

I have a hazy memory that one of my keys (possibly for the saab?) went wonky when I replaced the battery. I turned the ignition (but not the engine) on with the spare key and then held the unlock button down on the dud key for about 20 seconds - it then seemed to sync itself with the car and was OK to use.
I was waiting for as many answers before getting back. I have a Jaguar xf 2009 and thanks to all and I will have go at some of the suggestions.
