Make and model of car might help.
Perhaps Google it for your particular model? Is the battery in correctly, sometimes it's easy to get it round the wrong way?
Chuck: Smart key as in Smart car?
With some car keys if the battery is out over a certain time, they have to be reset ( usually at the main dealers ).
we have a renault can have a look for yo in our book
Ginge... Good point, it may be a smart car key (My key is described as a smart key but it's not for a Smart kay)

From what I can find if it's a Smart car key then you have a very short period of time in which to replace the battery and if you take too long then it's a dealer job to re-sync the car with the key (although not an expensive one)
I have a hazy memory that one of my keys (possibly for the saab?) went wonky when I replaced the battery. I turned the ignition (but not the engine) on with the spare key and then held the unlock button down on the dud key for about 20 seconds - it then seemed to sync itself with the car and was OK to use.
have you got the key in th right way? sounds daft but its sometimes the simplist things
battery even
And on my old rover 220 coupe it was...
1.Lock the car with the key.
2.Wait 30 seconds.
3.Unlock the car with the key.
4.Point the key fob at the car and press the lock button 4 times (slowly).

It varies hugely from car to car.
There are various ways of re syncing car keys, but we need to know make and model.
Yeah - but it's fun speculating tony ... :)
Yeah dave, some how I don't think we will get any reply from Ian4 though somehow.
If the questions left long enough we might cover all possible options of car...

For a mondeo its...

"Cylce the ignition from off, to on 4 times in 6 seconds, then put on to position 1, then press and hold any button on the fob until you hear a chime"
*Pedant alert*

"There are various ways of re syncing car keys"

You're actually re syncing the car, not the key.

I was waiting for as many answers before getting back. I have a Jaguar xf 2009 and thanks to all and I will have go at some of the suggestions. The manual must assume that my problem is not a problem and if all else fails it will be back to the dealer. Usually 'the anwer bank' is pretty good with help
If its a jag its a auto electrician issue, where are you based bab? IF the dealer is closer then go to them but its a fairly quick fix
