Like a few HGVs drivers on here & seen the build up of traffic on the motorways due to the outside lane being closed to snow, the police should allow the HGVs "only to use this lane to clear the snow", it's not dangerous but sensible, as you may have seen tonight the M4 >>5.. down to one lane in places & it only takes an artic to Jack knife then you have a blocked Motorway. Then motorist stuck overnight in car, if the car is low on fuel, that overnight could cause the person death, as has been known to happen in the past, the majority of HGV Drivers are not glory boys, & neither are they unprofessional, they have the ability to keep the Motorways clear so let them do it.

Hi TWR, saw some terrific HGV driving earlier today on my way to work ( almost 2 hours to drive 10 miles ), An artic was coming around a motorway island to get on to the M6 southbound as it came around the island it started to jackknife I thought he's had it because it was sliding at the same time ( towards a row of cars waiting at traffic lights ). But he recovered it bought it straight again and proceeded on to the motorway.

The only thing I can say to that Tony, He / She / was either inexperienced or going to fast for the conditions, It does not matter if the HGV was loaded or not the power was pushing the unit & that does not give the steer axle grip, I'm glad it did not hit you Tony, Was that at Walsall?
Yep TWR, junction 9.
Question Author
You may not belive this???? Can you remember the horses at J9??
No what was that then TWR.
Question Author
Horse box South bound at J9, had a bump, back doors flew open horses done a runner, I'm going back some years here! ( when we used to use wood to run the trucks??) Wait for it.!!!!
LOL.

Away now Tony & all, I hope you all a safe one, just remember! In snow, there can only be one winner if your a driver!!!
In the OP, ///it only takes an artic to jackknife then you have a blocked motorway///
Then you want to put them in the outside lane to clear the snow, so they're not going to jackknife there then, is that what you're saying?
Do the police actually have the authority to allow this??

(Don't know the answer, just asking)
Love the link.
You won't catch me driving into snow in my artic, when there is a lane that is clear.

I'm not mad.
It makes you wonder why HGVs are out in heavy snow anyway when they are incapable of getting up the smallest incline. You can bet if there is a motorway holdup the HGV is to blame. Get them off the road until the roads are cleared of snow and ice.
... er, you might get a bit hungry and thirsty, pdq1.
I'd settle for banning the buggers from lane 2 on all dual carriageways, unless they are capable of completing an overtake in less than 30 seconds.

Arrogant, insensitive, uncaring ... just add your own invective whilst trailing another idiot doing the "56mph overtaking (eventually) 55mph" on the A14.

Anyone know whether it is actually possible to get someone prosecuted for ignoring the "no HGVs overtaking" ban between J0 and J1 ... seems to be routinely ignored as far as I can see ...

Sunny Dave they did have an experiment last year of no HGVs allowed to overtake on the two lane M11 which leads onto the A14. They removed the ban a couple of months ago, I don't know why.

Hop, your not a summer driver are you? regards the A14, when it was reconstructed the clown's should have thought about the increase of traffic off the M6 Link, for the traffic that moves from Felixstowe it should be up to Motorway standards. Regards Jackknifing, more often than not a jack knife is caused by some Idiot in a car that has not got a clue how to drive in snow / wet conditions.
Question Author
Sunny, to a point I agree.
Question Author
Yes they can get done if seen by the police & by the police only.
