Because they probably move off with the brakes lights lit due too the fact they have their left foot on the brake and the right foot on the accelerator.
^^^^EH! Anyone driving an automatic and using their left foot doesn't know what they're doing.
My Mum has an automatic and it doesn't have a hand or foot-break, so sorry, she is probably one of those people! lol :)
How does she stop?
There are some very bizarre opinions on here about how automatics work.
There are prudie. Quite worrying.
Sorry. She has a brake pedal but no hand-brake.
What make of car v&c?

Touareg...sorry again!

Lol
Ah, one of the latest models with the auto hold function. Very flash.
Yes I know that Zacs, I was just pointing out not all automatics have hand-brakes.
I wonder if the auto hold activates the brake lights. Probably not.
Zacs, if you noticed my "lol" at the end of my post, then you would realise I am trying to wind the OP up because I can't believe something so trivial annoys him/her! Of course she doesn't sit with her brake lights on, it was a joke. Please un-twist your knickers. You seem to be in a bit of a strop today!
I think it's you who's in a strop my dear. My comment was just idle curiosity. The OPs question is, I agree, miss informed and misguided at best.
It's not trivial, it's in the Highway Code.

You MUST NOT

use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users (see Rule 226).
In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.
Law RVLR reg 27
Well I drive an automatic and have my brake lights on at traffic lights exactly the same as I do when I'm driving a geared car. The automatic part is irrelevant.
Guilty as charged, I never use the handbrake, even on hill starts.

I cannot stand drivers who pull up the handbrake without depressing the button giving out that awful ratchety sound.
Zac...the auto hold does activate the brake lights...on a BMW anyway.
