rear spring on my car is it necessary to get both changed or can I get away with just changing the broken one.

I changed a front one on my old Merc a little while ago, it didn't seem to cause any issues. If I were you, I'd check the condition of the other one though.
..and if you're intending to do the job yourself, borrow a decent spring compressor - the generic ones are crap.
It is recommended that both springs on the same axle are replaced together for car stability, it could cost more if you only did one side and then the other broke.

Some garages would only fit two together because of safety issues!

As Tourman, As the car will be either on stands / Jacks, by changing the two the job has been done correct.

not necessary but adviseable...if it was mine i would..a lot of companies will only sell them in pairs..
