Car passed mot no probs. Tester mentioned sump is leaking. Quote to replace is £400. Seems a lot to me. What do you think? Had the same prob years ago (not this car). Wife tried to drive up a step! Could not find a replacement and a friend who could solved anything welded a patch on it.

Is it actually the sump it self IE got a crack / hole in it ? or is it leaking from the sump gasket or the sump plug ?.
It'll depend on the exact engine but europarts quote about £60 for a new sump

£400 sounds a little steep - was this a Ford garage by any chance? if so get a quote from an independent
one of those motoring mysterys, how a sump full of oil can rust through !! but they do....
Had a quick google and was surprised to read how many Focus owners have had this problem. I also think that £400 is too much .
On some ford engines you have to remove the gearbox to remove the sump, hence the high price.

It was an independent. They are pretty reliable on quites normally so they must have looked it up. One or two other things are failing (eg air conditioning. Timing belt needs changing. So I am getting rid of it. Its only worth around a grand. 5yo Beamers look like good value! Thanks for the replies.
If you get a BMW it would probably cost you £4000 not £ 400 to get rid of a leaking sump !
