My car tax expired on Feb 28th but I was away looking after my terminally ill relative. As soon as I came back on the 26th March I went online to renew my car insurance which I thought expired on the 25th March. I found a favourable price so took out the insurance. I then went online to renew my road tax but it informed me that on the 1st March I had no insurance so it wouldnt let me do it. I thought it must be a mistake so I looked out my insurance policy and was shocked to see Id made a mistake and it expired last month. I have put my car in the garage as although I now have insurance, I have no tax and I dont know what to do. Please advise me, Im so worried I'll get into trouble. Should I just go and tax it from the 1st April at the Post Office?
I had a quick look and it is likely the DVLA will ask for the back payment of the missing months' tax and impose an £80 Late Licensing Penalty so it's not as bad as you think
I recently took out a new tax disc for my husband on line with a missing month when it had not been used in that time. They reserve the right to follow this up, but in practice they didnt.
not if she was using it Prudie. Just take all your insurance, MOT and tax docs to the post office, explain you need to tax if from 1 March and you'll probably just have to pay extra to backdate it. Don't stress - I've done something similar before. Make sure the MOT is up to date before you go though.
Just tax it from 1st April, you won't get prosecuted for no insurance as they have no evidence of you actually being on the road. They may chase up the missing month but thy probably won't.
