Why does my engine die without warning?

While out driving my engine has taken to dying without warning on occasion. It appears to stall, but this can happen while stationary, or while on the move. No amount of down changing of the gears gets it going. So I literally have to coast to the curb.

Initially it would restart immediately. Now it will turn over but not hold idle, and dies as soon as I release the key. I get it going by holding the ignition key at full rotation and engaging first. It then moves off as if nothing has happended.

Also, it appears to happen quite randomly.
