My partner has just passed his driving test and would like to buy a new car but they usually want 12 months driving licence first so can I just buy the car in my name (I already have a car) and then he can be a names driver for a year and then he can go and get his new car. Reason for doing this is we have just brought a house and his insurance would cost us about 85 per month which we really can't afford so under my name would be cheaper!! Thanks :-)

Thank you. I have looked into car insurance for him with loads of companies and its always about 800-1000 per year, whereas if I get it under my name it is 250 which is a huge saving. It is costing us a fortune to buy this house so we just need to save a bit for the first year wherever possible. So, if we both have no accidents for 1 year then I will still only get 1 year NCB but if I am ok but he crashes then i lose?

sometimes they ask how many cars are in the household, and take this into account.

My parents both have cars and when my mum went to insure my sister on her car, they asked were there other cars in the family, or was this car the main one.  When told that this was the 2nd car, they assumed that my dads car was only driven by him, and my mum didnt drive at all and was only insuring the car in her name so that my sister would get cheaper insurance by being the 2nd driver!

Unfortunately their system wouldnt accept that this wasnt the case!

Try asking you driving instructor or another about the Pass plus scheme. this is further lessons that can often knock several hundreds of your insurance, it is normallyabout 6 hours tuition on motorways dual carriage ways and bad weather etc so is usfull if not vital stuff any way. try the pass plus website at www.passplus.gov.org
