Rav 4,new Engine Or Get Rid?

got an 02 reg rav 4,was great till engine went..now cant find one less than a grand,then ti fit at garage etc..would you pay this to gt fized or sell parts??

Personally I'd get rid of it, the cost of a new engine and fitting will be more than the car is worth.

how long does the bodywork and running gear of a rav4 last. No point in putting a new/good engine in something that might cost a fortune in new wheel bearings,brake discs, exhaust, battery, tyres etc. in a year or so.

I think that you would probably be better off selling it complete as a none runner.

i don't know what went on it but it needs a brand new one! the light came on and was driven again and then konked out! they have got it running at garage but smoking and spluttering and knocking,garage said if we had have stopped when light came on the damage could have been fixed but as it was driven again after starting to get into work its made it worse.

Sounds like oil pump failure to me, there was some oil in it wasn't there ?.

do your homework....what do they sell for with a replaced engine? what would it fetch for parts? What would you have to spend out for a replacement?

Look for a second hand engine from a scrap yard much cheaper .

Depending on the Condition / mileage / MOT / History, the knocking is the big end shells ( On the crankshaft) depending on the strip down, crank condition, piston condition, valves / Camshaft condition, if the car has a good prior service history, myself would consider a rebuild, that would mean a recon engine in other words, the head would be skimmed, valve stems checked & new seal inserted, it's a lot of work, but as said, you can get a 2nd hand engine engine, the trouble with that Pink, it will take a day to take out & refit an engine, but you will not be guaranteed that's it's a good one, this can only be found when the engine is running, ask around your local area for prices, DO NOT go to the dealers, do you know the ownner of a small garage that would do the job for you? if so, expect the job to take about 2 weeks, the cost, in the region of £800 / £900. If you do decide to get it done, it would be cheaper to go that way than get another that you do not know anything about! History etc.
