Evidently i can remove this little chip like thing (i've seen it) under the bonnet of my subaru legacy (brighten) to convert it from a 4WD to a 2WD. Are there any problems with this?

Subarus use a permanent four wheel drive system. In other words all four wheels are connected to the engine by great big mechanical bits under the car! I cant imagin how an engine management chip could somehow disconnect this, unless it somehow uncoupled the centre diferential, but again, never heard of that being possible in a Scoob. The only problem I could forsee is that you would loose the extra traction that 4WD gives you, in exchange for a very small increase in MPG.
thats along the same lines i was thinking, it can only be a relay that controls the centre diff. minus points are definitely poor handling and the distinct possibility of transmission damage. if it aint broke...
