Cherish number plate

I have a private number plate on my motorbike. It was on when I bought it. Friends say it may be worth selling given that I really don't value it and the price I paid for the bike was fair without it.

How do I go about selling it, and what does it cost me to put the old number back on?

To transfer (Form V317) costs �80.
To retain the number for 12 months e.g.you have no buyer (Form V778/1 ) costs �105 (plus �25 for each further 12 months). 

As to putting 'the old number back on', unless it has been put on retention (see above) you will need to apply for a new number, probably using Form V55/5 at a cost of �25.

You should look at websites devoted to buying/selling plates to see the procedure you should follow.

A motorcycle reg number is NOT transferable to a car, however a car reg number can be transferred to a motorcycle.
Take a look on http://www.nationalnumbers.co.uk .. I bought my private reg number off them.

Kev_UK - It used to be the case that you couldn't transfer a motorcycle reg. no. to a car, however this is a quote from the DVLA website;

"Motorcycles and mopeds can participate fully in the number transfer arrangements"

The change came into effect 1st October 2001.

Don't forget the cost of making the new plates themselves. This should be factored into the sums too.
