Agreed but some parts don't come within routine servicing schedules (and so can't meaningfully be 'looked after'). For example, any car which is more than a few years old can suffer an alternator failure. Even something as simple as leaving a sweater too close to the tailgate latch in the back of a car can cause the tailgate not to lock properly, meaning that the interior light stays on and flattens the battery. (Written from recent experience!)

Local garages aren't much help. One of the two near me doesn't even have any pick-up truck or low trailer. And finding any garage to come out, even in working hours, proved impossible when I last needed one; the RAC were there within the hour, with the right equipment, and got me back on the road again. Out of hours, on some desolate road, you have no chance at all. All made worse by the fact that faults in modern cars, though diagnosed by the driver, are very difficult or impossible to cure by them.

Tried using the breakdown cover that came free with my motor insurance. Would have been better ringing a florist. Ended up driving the 50 miles home on three cylinders as all the mechanic who came out said was that one of my injectors was kaput and he would tow me the two miles to his yard and maybe fix it in a week or so, in the meantime I'd have to sleep rough in the bushes or spend a billion Euro on a taxi. Been with the AA ever since who have repatriated me and my vehicle more than once when my Italian electrics have decided to go to lunch instead of making my car work.
