When an engine is ticking over and it sounds like the buses from years ago i.e. BRMMM.....BRMMM.....BRMMM.....BRMMM.....What is the problem and what is the technical term ? I know the answer but can`t think of it

Something to do with the exhaust system perhaps?

Is the term you looking for called "Hunting" when the engine speeds up and slows down when at tick over.

Yes, it's called "hunting" (At first I was going to say is it a diesel engine.. but the buses made a Carumm carumm carumm sound). Hunting is usualy due to the timing being out (too advanced or retarded).. or the fuel mixture / air screw being out.
