why is my engine making this noise

i recently puchased a Audi 80 2.0 e 16v.  When i bought this the mechanic i bought from said he would service it and MOT it before giving it ot me - Anyway the car was fine except jerking between gear changes and shaking at speeds over 55mph - anyway the mechanic then fitted a new cambelt as he said it was due ( mileage 84000) since the cambelt change the car now sounds like a diesel tractor instead of a sporty 2.0 audi - and the oil light keeps beeping at me when over 2000 revs - why is this?

Take it back to the mechanic.  Tell him to sort it.  If he doesn't then ask for your money back.  All items sold must be of merchantable quality and fit for their purpose.  Any aggro, see your Trading Standards dept or any organistaion which your mechanic belongs to.  Too many people don't complain enough!

Sounds like that something shifted when the cambelt was being installed, so the timing could be way out. Back to the mechanic I'm afraid.. and if he can't sort it, he can bloomin' way pay for someone competent to sort it, either VW dealer or a specialist cambelt clinic.

I am not sure about the engine problem as i have never worked on Audi's but the vibrating problem may be as simple as the wheel balancing needs attention. To test this you should drive your car until it begins vibrating and then up your speed a little, if the vibration stops at around 65-70 mph then take the car to your local tyre fitters and get them balanced, this is quite inexpensive.
