After a short run, the tick over became erratic. Since then the bike fails to turn over. The battery shows 12+ volts, I can hear the solonoid clicking and tested the feed and earth. I have tested chassis/engine earth. I have tested the starter motor on and off the engine and it spins round but doesnt turn the engine when mounted even with spark plugs removed.

I have put a volt meter on to the feed of the starter motor and it shows some 2+ volts when I press the starter button.

The bike has allways been a keen starter and good runner and all the lights are bright and everything else funtions as normal.

I am not an electrician so please keep it simple as possible.

Thanks

It sounds like you've got problems with the starter motor itself. If there's only 2V across it when you press the starter it's taking far more current than it should, so could be a problem with the windings. This might not stop it turning with no load but, even with the plugs removed, it still takes a reasonable effort to turn the engine. I suggest you get it...

Another option is that your battery is done for. It would spin the starter with no load but not with any loading at all. Try connecting a second battery and repeating experiments.
I'm not into bikes but I would also say, the Battery.
