What's the difference between driving in the middle lane and hogging it.
I, along with dozens of cars to the front and back of me, drive along at 60 - 65, keeping up with the traffic but leaving a good space for breaking, stay in the middle lane. Apparently this is breaking the law??
I think "hogging" is when people can pull back over to the inside lane, but don't. So anyone who wants to overtake them has to go into the very outside lane. You should be in the leftest lane that is safe to drive in.
As pixie says - you should always move into the leftmost lane that has appropriate space for you to drive safely in - then move back out again if you need to overtake a slower vehicle.
We could (and people here usually do) argue all day about what is 'appropriate' and what is 'safe'.
No-one disputes that on a completely empty motorway you should be in the left hand lane (unless a BMW driver, in which case your car would die of shame).
No-one disputes that on the M25 in the rush hour you can be in any lane that seems to be making progress.
The problem is 'where is the change-over' point between these two extremes - and we will never agree on that on AB.
Also, as we all know, those in the middle lane are doing 80+ anyway so no one can be inconvenienced, well except those who own the road and everyone must get out of their way.
In a lot of cases Jenny, driver stop in the Outside lane for no reason but ignorance! "They do not know the rules of the road" we have seen on Motorways, nothing on the inside lane & yet a driver is stuck in the outside lane as if there is a magnet holding them there.
