Law For Trailers??

http:// www.arm itagetr ailers. com/tra ilerlaw .htm
This site seems to suggest that the current regs apply to trailers made after 28/10/2012 - fair enough but it makes no mention of older trailers. I know there must be some regs for older trailers but this article seems unclear. Does anyone have any knowledge of how the law is applied to older trailers? thanks

I built a trailer in 1975 and made sure it complied with the law then ie, weighed less than 2cwt for unbraked trailer and had all the necessary lights. As with cars, it is not necessary to bring it into line with current regulations (semaphore indicators, single brake light etc are still legal on old cars).

Bhg, The comp I used to work for tried to run older HGV Trailers with a third Axle, the weight went up from 20tonnes to 24, I was coming back from Sheffield over to Manchester, I felt a crack & the whole lot Jerked, the trailer was loaded with Bricks from Lincoln, the Trailer's Neck cracke at the "Swan's" neck just near the Fifth wheel, they had to weld and Strengthen the Swan Neck, the trailers was never made for that weight & the whole fleet of Trailers had to be replaced.
TWR - it sounds like the trailers were still legal even though they were unsafe. Somebody didn't think it out before they changed the rules, although you could argue that you were using a 20tonne trailer to carry 24tonnes because you applied new rules to an old trailer instead of old rules to an old trailer.
