Great idea but how do they charge the non UK vehicles?

The idea of the new system is to blow out the need for vehicles to stop at the crossing. Any of the other systems mentioned (cash, card payments, Dart Tags) all require vehicles to stop. The ANPR system now introduced does not and the toll booths will be completely removed by next March. There are no barriers or booths controlling the London Congestion zone and the Dartford Crossing now works in the same manner.

Yes I take it, Sir O that it is not the Schengen Agreement to which you object but to the UK's refusal to sign up to it. I could lead off on one of my "...vociferous anti european" posts to further infest this site. But I won't as it has nothing to do with 3T's question. But I will say that if you want to see at first hand one of the many "benefits" that the Schengen Agreement has brought to mainland Europe, just pop over to Calais (before the ferry fares go up 30% courtesy of EU "green" regulations) and have a mosey round there.

TTT I would like to go and live in the "schengen" area as you suggest that I do,but I doubt that I would have the ability to earn a living in mainland Europe.

I will stay here where the my brain permits me to earn a good living due to the competition not being so competent as in mainland Europe.

T T T - thank you so much for taking the time to post the link, but my problem is that this will be our 'return to UK' journey so I will have to cancel my French internet contract and will be (for some days) minus the ability to do anything on line (nightmare!). My phone makes and receives telephone calls and that's it. On other occasions I have been able to use my laptop in UK - but this one is different. I'll have a good look at the link, however, and see if it is possible to pay in advance for a specific day; it would make life easier. Thanks again.

jourdain2 If you can put the postcode of the area of your final UK destination on this thread I will look for the nearest PayPoints to it so you can pay in cash. You have until midnight on the day after you use the crossing

EDDIE51 Thank you so much. We shall be hiring a holiday cottage for a week until our house contents catch up with us, I've just looked it up and the postcode is YO17 9LU. I think I already have one not too far away, but if you can find another nearer it would be great. We will be very tired after 2 days travelling.

jourdain, can you not just connect using Wifi? or just go to an internet cafe? or pay before you leave?? do you have a lap top? if so any old WiFi will do in a motorway services for example.

Never actually tried connecting to a cafe/service station wifi, but I'm sure it works and will have a go if necessary. It just seems very odd that in France there are lanes on the autoroutes where pre-paid cards/vehicles can sail straight through, alongside the standard lanes for more ordinary methods of payment and yet this is not possible at Dartford; so non-compliant, more difficult transactions require quite a lot of effort on the part of the user. The French system works very well (unlike most French systems, I hasten to add).
