There may be a horseshoe shaped clip holding it on, use a hooked shape implement to pull it out.

The window winders on my 1.4 Polo ( X reg) are held on by a small screw. Both clip or screw are accessed by prising away the trim behind the winder, with the winder in a vertical position.
