Yes hc, what is road tax? VED is the cost of having the right to use your vehicle on public roads. Subsequent usage thereof is not compulsory. So "fair" or not does not come into it. It's like saying I pay £25k a year in NI and I also pay for prescriptions and I've been to hospital twice in 12 years, fair? I would not ask the question normally because I know the 2 things are not related.
do away with the tax and add tax to the fuel , this would mean the ones who use the roads most would pay more, if your car was fuel efficient you would pay for miles travelled and if it was a gas guzzler you would pay more
