If the registered owner is lucky, it's an £80 fixed penalty (which is reduced to £40 if paid within 28days). However if the matter goes to court the maximum fine is £1000 (plus costs, plus a court fee of £150 plus a 'victim surcharge' of 10% of the fine). My son got an £80 fee to release the clamp they put on it and a £250 fine. So it cost him £320.

As Eddie has indicated, fixed penalties or fines are in addition to the £250 release fee that would be charged if the vehicle was clamped. (The registered owner can also be ordered to pay the tax that was due for the untaxed period).

#Eddie, did he get a £10 discount then?
No, it cost him £320 and he never even drove the car!
Baldric means ...

250 + 80 = 330
^ Sorry my adding up was wrong!

Easily done, couldn't resist it!
I had to take my socks off to be sure. ;-)
I'll let you know. I went past a roadside DVLA road tax camera the other day with no MOT or road tax. I was doing a few hundreds metres to get fuel so I could get to the garage for an MOT, so I could get the tax ! (talk about a vicious circle)
Not the old 'going for petrol to get me to the MOT' excuse. Sheesh.
IgglePiggle, was it booked in for the MOT at the time? Were you driving to the test?
booked in but not on the way to it, I still had minor work to complete ! Arghhh !
By the way Zacs, I like your answer. :-)
You are allowed to drive to a prebooked MOT test, so as long as you had booked the test you may be ok.
