Petrol Cap Won't Open

I went to fill up with petrol yesterday and couldn't open the petrol cover.

It only opens when the key is in the ignition but it just wouldn't open.

My OH was the last to fill it up and he forgot to shut it and had to stop to close it when he was tooted by someone who noticed.

Anyone have an idea on how to get it open or will I have to take it to the garage?

Thanks

What make and model?
There's often a manual override system to cater for this sort of situation. Suggest consult handbook.
Go into the boot & remove the covering trim on the petrol side of the boot, you should see the cable going to the boot lock. I have the same issue with my then car, BMWE36, It was the locking plastic Latch that went into the Petrol Opening Cover, it wasn't returning far enough. ( A simple fix )
Should have said the Petrol Lock
Another thing you could try is disconnecting the battery for about 10 mins and then reconnect the battery. This may reboot the electronics ( your radio may need to have the code put back into it afterwards, so make sure that you have it handy ).
