New car & insurance

Hi - I recently bought a 2nd hand car for my girlfriend. On route to her house I was stopped by the police & asked to produce documents. As it was an impulse buy from a friend of a friend i had no insurance. Is this an offence or are you allowed to drive the vehicle to your place of residence without insurance?

It's an offence. You can drive without an MOT, if you are en route to a testing station to get the MOT carried out. Sorry, you are in reasonably deep doo-doo - a fine and some points are coming your way. You may also be fined and pointed if the car is not MOT'd. I'm taking it for granted that you have a licence?

If the car was still insured by the ex-owner and you have insurance for another vehicle i.e. comprehensive cover then you could be insured to drive another vehicle and still be legal.  You need to speak with the old owner and check your insurance.

Normally that section in a policy is that you are covered 3rd party "to drive a car not owned by you and lot leased to you under a hire purchase agreement".

So did you "own" the car or did your girlfriend? and do you have that clause in your policy?

my advice would be tell the magistrate everything. Don't billy bull your way through. If you get interviewed by the old bill make sure it is at the station and not your home. Therefore you will get a free solicitor offered to you.

First time offence assuming this is your first and bought insurance straight afterwards you will get �250 fine. Points will depend on the mags mood. (approx)

Well like I say - do check your policy and find out if you're guilty before you throw yourself on the mercy of the court.

As a matter of interest, you don't need to have comprehensive insurance to be insured to drive other cars... I'm TPFT and can do this, with the owners permission.
