What If The Labour Party Got Rid Of...

I purchased my new car back in march from a dealer, the problem is that I was never given the log book but I was given the green part of the form (V56C i think??) and told that they will send the change of keeper part off to the DVLA. My car tax ran out on 31/08/05 so i get my documents together and go to my local post office to be told that i couldnt tax the car with this slip as it had expired and i had to go to my nearest DVLA office, so i did this and was told that the documents had been posted to the previous owner of my car because he needed to confirm he was no longer the registered keeper as he had a private number plate registered to it. i was then told that the new keeper paperwork would be processed and this process takes 6-8 weeks and after this time would i get my log book. So 3 weeks have passed and im still waiting. Im paying for cabs to get to work and back and im paying the finance on the car that i cant drive. Does anyone know what i should do to try and speed up the process? is anyone at fault here or is it just one of those things? it seems unfair to me that i cant just pay my car tax and get on with a peaceful life!
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks

Ignoring all the bunkum about cherished plates, etc. you bought a car 6 months ago, and you don't have logbook. I would suggest the dealer get his finger out, and tell him that you intend to claim all the costs of cabs back off him for his negligence. That may shake him a bit.
You may also try to get in touch with the DVLA, and ask their advise. They can be helpful.
