What happened to Q-reg cars when they changed the system to 51, 02, 52 etc.?

When a motor vehicle had either an indeterminate year of manufacture or the registration marks for that particular year were used, the DVLA would issue a Q plate to cover the plate.  One of the main reasons for changing to our recent and present system, apart from the fact we had come to the end of the alphabet road, was that the mathematic permutations of the new style is much greater than previously used.  Consequently Q plates would now not have a place in modern UK registrations.

As far as I am aware Q plates are still issued for "Rebuilt, Radically Altered Vehicles and Kit Cars".

Since the Q plate covers 'indeterminate year of manufacture' it has no need to conform to the present format which is predicated on the use of an age identifier.
