Assuming I can get hold of them myself, does anybody know if fitting 2 new gas boot struts is an easy DIY job?

Very easy, goodgoalie, they virtually clip on and off.
I know this is a Focus but it's the same principle on most cars.

Thanks, Tony, good to know. Hadn't realised just how heavy the boot was till the struts failed - have nearly brained myself a few times!
Very easy, all you need is a flat blade screwdriver and a prop to hold the boot lid up.
The struts have a clip you remove with the screwdriver then the new ones push on.

LOL, prop it up with a piece of wood.
I got mine from here:

Excellent service, prices and quality. Fitted very easily in five minutes.
I laughed at the way they hide the number plate at the start of the first video then completely forget at the end. :)
Prop the bootlid up with that brush you never use for it's real purpose
