Many thanks to all who replied. I thought it was probably another dirty little trick devised by pencil pushers in the treasury and elsewhere to gouge members of the public yet again.
Just to point out that the 'pen pushers' in the treasury are just doing as they are told - they don't make up these charges they just bring them in. I'm sure they don't like paying it anymore than you do!!
Thanks hc. I had a company car for half of that time and since then might have avoided it by buying pre registered demo cars with less than 500 miles on the clock. I do remember the old car tax days when on my first car (around £4000) I had to pay a few hundred pounds in Car Tax, so I suppose this isn't too bad
