Wheel Tracking/ Alighment

Car was taken to garage. Mechanic spent 50 minutes working on the car.
He said he could not finish the job until the car was driven 200 miles so that the work that he had done would " settle in ".
Is this a wind up.
Is this because he is hoping that the customer will not bother to return.
Is this because he can't do the job properly.
What other reason could there be?

Certainly talking rubbish in relation to the wheel tracking/alignment.

However if he is not charging for this, you’ve nothing to loose – and he might find that things are moving out of alignment due to everything not being tightened to the correct torque.

But if you haven’t paid him yet – all the more reason not to go back.

Many, many years ago when it was necessary to dismantle my Ford’s Pinto engine every once in a while – the Haynes manual instructed that the engine head bolts were re-torqued after 1,000 miles. Of course I just over-torqued them, not wanting the hassle of removing the rocker box/cover etc.

LLam, if its only the front that's getting aligned, it involves getting the steering wheel centred, the front road wheels are straight, a tracking Alignment gauge on the outer edge on both front wheels / Tyres, the job should take at the "most" an hour, cost in the region of £20, from what you have stated this garage needs to be watched, on your receipt what have the done to the car?
