Vw Golf Sv - 2 Years Old - Updating Sat Nav

has anyone updated their sat nav SD card which should be done twice a year (free for first 3 yrs) Mine is Discover Media Generation no 1 - you have to download updates & save to computer, insert SD card from car and back up on computer, clear same & then transfer downloads to SD card I was a bit apprehensive about clearing my SD card so thought I would try doing same with a blank SD card from my camera which is the same size but it doesn't read in the car with the downloads- wondered if anyone else had tried doing the same or indeed if you know for definite that it will only work using the original SD card from the car?? Whilst I don't know I 'd guess the card needed formatting for the sat nav to read it.

If part of the procedure is to back up the existing data then I'd hope that would cover the apprehensive issue.

It may be a question of just deleting the files on the card - if you format it you may be wiping out hidden files that make the car recognise it.
