It'll just bring in more revenue from those fed up with being overly controlled. Along with comments from some about how the financial demands from the State on those who progress at a reasonable pace are somehow voluntary. Why not go the whole hog and apply a 5mph limit on all roads and revenue cameras every 5 yards ?
would help if HGVs were confined to inside lane as they are in much of Europe...no overtaking..spray kept away from cars in wet weather.. visibility of other vehicles clear etc etc
Would cause more chaos than ever Murray, think of slip roads Off / On, if the HGV's were confined to the inside lane, when the limit was 60mph, there was never the bunching like it is today.
The way HGV's behave on the motorway is disgusting!! Overtaking each other and holding others up - thought they were restricted in the speed they could do?
In answer to your question NO!
I've misses an exit on a German Autobahn - long uphill gradient. reduced to speed of slowest, bunch up, not enough gap to get between them for my exit.
Worth pointing out that motorways are one of the safest road types already, anyway. Cars are better made than when motorways were first built: speed limits should have increased to reflect that. Drivers treat them as if they were anyway.
It's been in other papers too. I saw it in the Mail, I think, the other day but I can't find the article now to give a link. A suggestion by some MPs in an attempt to reduce pollution.
When motorways were first introduced few cars could do 70mph (there was no limit then, anyway). I remember an advertisement for the Renault Dauphine bragging that it would do 70mph.
