The "chaos and carnage" in one sense already exists, what with around 2,000 deaths annually on British roads and 200,000 or so further injuries (figures somewhat rounded and there are annual variations). It's hard to imagine handing the bulk of driving duties over to entities that don't get tired, distracted or irritable wouldn't drastically reduce those figures, but I doubt that zero fatality rate is ever reachable. For some reason, a sizeable but not a total reduction isn't worth trying, for some people at least.
Maybe the most dangerous time will be when there's a mixture of traffic on the roads. Maybe not. It seems worth trialling, at least.
