I think I can but it does seem like I should not be able to. I passed my test in 1982.

You're probably too old, baldric ;-)

^^^ ???
I used to be a 'trade-plater', delivering vehicles across the country. My licence dates back to 1990 like you, I'm entitled to drive vehicles up to 7.5t. The first truck I ever drove was remarkably similar to the one you've linked to. (It was actually a flatbed, rather than a low-loader but it had a similar long wheelbase). The first thing I had to do was to manoeuvre it out of a congested yard (which was fun in itself) then, after a long motorway drive, I had to get it around some very narrow, and very busy, London streets. On arrival at the auction site I was delivering it to, I had to do an 11-point turn to get into the place, only to be told that it should have gone to their other yard down the road, so that I then had to struggle to get it out again!

However I drove loads of 7.5t trucks after that and I'm sure that you're also entitled to do so.
I think the law changed for licence holders after 1997 so your c1 allows you to drive up to 7.5t. I understand what you mena because i hired a 7.5t to move some stuff and nearly had it in a ditch because it is not like a big van!
Category C1E
You can drive C1 category vehicles with a trailer over 750kg.

The combined MAM of both can’t exceed 12,000kg.
