Statistically, though, young drivers get many times more points on their licence than "older" drivers, certainly that's how insurance companies see it when calculating premiums.

6 points in first two years and they lose their license. I think that’s harsh enough. I would imagine just 2 point would make insurance prohibitively expensive. Yes, I know there are the rebels who don’t bother with insurance.

^ As said, more than a 6 month ban is already law, 2 speeding offences (which are at least 3 points each ) in the first 2 years after passing your test and your licence is revoked.
You can't get it back until you have re-passed an extended version of the driving test and attended a speed awareness course!
Plus your insurance will go through the roof!

They are not. The regulation (6 points and licence is revoked) is the New Drivers' Act, not the Young Drivers' Act. It applies to anybody who commits offences within two years of passing their first test. Also important to remember that they are not banned but have their full licence revoked. They can immediately obtain a new provisional licence and must pass their test (both parts) again.

Islay, it is not just younger drivers , it is ANY driver who is in the first 2 years of passing the test. You could pass it at 70 and get 2 speeding fines before you are 72, you still get your licence revoked until you pass an extended test.
