I don't know what sort of ignition system your car uses, but when I had a similar problem some years ago, it turned out to be moisture in the distributor cap. It would start from cold, then die about twenty minutes later and refuse to start. Leave it for 10 minutes or so and it would then be OK for the remainder of the day. I have had this happen to me on two different cars. Same cause, same effect.
Hope this helps.

cheers dogsbody i cant see any moisture though i guess i will have to carry a spare spark plug to check whether it fires..i have also been told it could be a choked up cat. con.

Is it a carburettor car? It's possible you could be experiencing vapourisation, this happens if the petrol gets too hot in the pipe. else you could have a faulty float. If its fuel injected, this could be a sensory problem.

Question Author
no, its fuel injection

any ideas if its a sensor problem..why would this happen only when warm?
It could be a temperature sensor or it could be the Crank Angle Sensor, sometimes sensors become rather sensitive to heat and stop working, especially when they start to get old, you would really need to put diagnostic equipment on to get to the root cause. Go to a electronics suppliers like RS or similar and get a can of freezer, its an aerosol with a substance that really cools stuff, and spray it on any components that could be causing it, because I think heat is the link here.

cheers steakmad i think its the sensor on the coil..there is no spark at dis end of coil lead when its playing tricks and the sensor wiring block is right next to the heater pipe..do u think i should try a coil from a breakers..meantime i will get some freezer spray
