Car Dealers Question

Looking at getting a decent second hand motor, probably from a smallish dealer (not main dealer). Looking to spend up to £14k and will pay cash.

Do the dealers have any room to budge on price? I'm not talking a lot but maybe throw a tank of fuel in or a couple of hundred quid off?

Some of the cars i'm looking at are over 100 miles away so don't want to go up there and look a berk when trying to get a few quid off (i've never bought from a dealer before)

Most second hand car dealers are open to sensible negotiation. You can but ask. Good luck.

You have the upper hand here regards a 2nd hand car Hammer, if you don't get what you want. walk away if they want your money they will run after you, go for everything you can, fuel, RFT, Mats, if the boot is capable, a proper spare wheel not a tin of rubbish, check out the selling sites, if you see something that you fancy check the spec out on-line, if you are not mechanic minded take someone that knows with you, check the History, Service Book, HPI Check, check for recalls, have they been done, if the garage say it's a cracking car make your own judgment & don't be fooled by their patter, a lot of people make the mistake of not checking the cars history don't be one of them. good luck.

Most of my cars have cost just a few hundred quid. The only time I've paid 4 figures was for a Citroen diesel advertised at £4250. I offered the dealer £3800 but he declined. I started to walk away but pulled two grand in cash out of my pocket and waved it at him, saying "Last chance mate. You can have this as a deposit and the rest tomorrow". He changed his mind and accepted my offer ;-)

There are some dealers who won't budge much. I always put the reg no into webuyanycar for a valuation first.
Allow that valuation to be 20-25% below what the car is really worth. That gives you some idea of its real value.
I offered a dealer 3k for a car listed at 3250 about 3 weeks ago and he refused it - he still has the car not sold today.
I would expect 10% discount normally

Hammerman.....£14,000 is rather a lot of money to spend on a second hand car !

My advice would be to decide on what type of car you want and if, possible, what model. For instance, if you want a medium sized car, than perhaps a Ford Focus might be OK....a slightly bigger car, and maybe a Nissan Qashqai may suit.

Then, go to your main Dealer and you will find that they have a good stock on one-owner-from-new models with a full service history. The car has probably been bought from them, maybe 2-3 years ago, and that person has now traded it in for another new model.

You stand a much better chance of getting something trouble-free, than you would from any second-hand car dealer.

Quoi, if you are prepared to look & wait, there are 100s of used cars out there on forecourts, there would be no way I would back down If I offered on a used car, as said & has been stated, they might have the car but you have the ACE card & that's the money, Hammer, you have no need to go to a dealer check your local paper out, one advise If I can, do not buy off the side of the road?? Car for sale with mobile numbers on the window, unless you know the person that's selling it.

Having recently had my car written off I need to get a new one.

I can't decide if I want new, ex-demo, used or an old banger. I am likely to be off the road for ~7mths next year hence considering a banger.

The real head scratch is choosing make and model as I want to downsize. I hate trawling around dealerships:-(

The car in question is a 2014/15 qashqai. There are loads about for the spec I want and most are coming out at around £13k. I’ve searched eBay and auto trader and there’s several I like in the colour I want. Waterboatman....I’m in Sussex.

Just to say that the model I’m after is the acenta premium, 1.5 diesel which pays £0 Road tax and has low insurance as well as max 78mpg on a good run. Oh, and lots of toys

mate for 14k cash you'll knock at least a bag off the asking price. Play hardball with them, they wont want you trotting out of the door.

ps I wouldn't get a diesel, they'll be banned from all towns before long and VED will sky rocket.

Hammerman....excellent choice of car !

I had one, which was 1 year old when I bought it in 2007.

Unfortunately, it was destroyed 2 years later, by a drunk driver, and I had a narrow escape.

I would buy another Qashqai today if I could afford one....one of the best cars I have ever owned !

My advice would still be the same....go to your nearest Nissan dealer and see what they can do for you....another one-owner-from-new, 2-3 years old model would seem to suit you down to the ground.

My local Dealer has quite a few, 2-3 year olds, for less that £14,000 !

If I was buying a car for about £14t Cash I would expect at least a reduction of £500 off the listed price of the car, plus car mats, half a tank of fuel a full years MOT plus a service, aim at this and see what they say, remember all these add ons cost them trade price which is not a lot. Go heavy on them, you are also buying at a bad time for car dealers right now, another plus in your favour.

Hammer, you have the likes of Gumtree, Freeads, also look out for the Model members clubs & there will be a few if you search, if you have the time & search in the right places you could knock a £1000+ off a 2nd hand motor.
