Any idea what a garage might charge (approx.) to replace the head gasket on my daughter's oldish Honda civic?

Shouldn’t be too much Khandro. Probably about 3 hours labour and the parts, so £170 or so.
Has there been any damage to the head, if there has then the bill goes up dramatically.
Zacs, £170 you reckon? I would have guessed at more than twice that at least!! These days it costs that to lift the bonnet!

don't know donny, I'm being a bit cautious before I say "Don't worry, dad will pay for it" ;0)
Cost my son over £600 for his old Clio and I was quoted £900 for my Megane which I declined and got different car. May depend on part of country you live in for labour costs.
I was thinking £50 an hour and £20 for the gasket. Maybe I’m way out. Looking on here, it would seem so:

Rather then spend so much on a very old car, I thought of offering this;
https://www.gumtree.com/p/mercedes-benz/mercedes-benz-avangarde-petrol1-4-l-petrol/1277709952
which though quite old, it is low mileage, mot'd, full service history, lady owner and looks to be a nice little motor for the price, but guess what? - she doesn't like its shape. Doh!
From past experience, twice as much in a Honda franchise as anywhere else....the main reason I stopped buying Hondas.
^ Yes do not get it done at a Honda dealer. If you do want it done go to a good small independent garage. It would be worthwhile getting a decent mechanic to look at it, they will be able to give you an idea if it is just a blown gasket or cylinder head damage. It it's head damage then buying another car on part exchange may be the cheaper option.
Was there any history of overheating?
