Car Tax / Vehicle Excise Duty

When you tax your car, you have to supply insurance details - I am buying a new car on Tueday but am worried that the covernote will not come through in time. I have an insurance document for my other car which covers me to drive any vehicle 3rd party. Will this suffice for the post office?

ok, my tax was due 1st october...... so was my blooming insurance - only had the car a month. i actually rang up the dvla as i was worried, i went 4 days without tax and was told i was driving around illegally, the car must either be taxed or kept off road or you will be fined as it is computerised now. i went that day to the insurance office and picked up a cover note in person so i could tax the car.
