I taxed my car for 12 months last week, then today I bought a new one!

What happens to the tax I’ve just paid for?
I forgot to ask the dealer.

Thanks.

You need to claim it back but only whole months so you will lose a month. You cannot pass tax on at sale anymore.
you will get a refund of 11 months.
It is returned to you - providing you tell DVLA that you have sold the car - you cannot pass on the tax to a dealer (or the next owner).

Thanks for your answers.
So does sending the (whatever it’s called) form to say I’m no longer the owner, automatically generate a tax refund, or do I have to make a separate claim?

Jeez. This *Ad that must NOT be named* thing and the music is driving me mad!
You still having problems, TTT?
You will have to let DVLA know and make a claim, it won't hapen automatically

I am at home now so no, bigbad, but it was annoying at work all day.
Prudie is mistaken. You don't need to claim, and it will happen automatically.
Hopkirk is correct. When you send the correct bit of the form to the DVLA the refund is automatic.

Just in case any of you are interested:

Taxed the car for 1st March. Traded it in on 15th March. Got a refund cheque today.
I’m quite impressed at how quick they were.
